Register for our virtual event here

Our event will take place at 11am PT / 2pm ET on March 3. Details: During this 45 minute Zoom event, hear from people on the front lines of our smokefree fight: the advocates exposed to secondhand smoke who have fought or are fighting now for smokefree air at work or home, as ANR marks 49 years of the smokefree movement. Join us to celebrate and see flight attendants, pilots, musicians, hospitality workers, casino dealers, and ANR members in support of smokefree housing.

Day of Breathing celebrates our history of advocacy and promotes awareness about the dangers of secondhand smoke. ANR has been fighting for your health since 1976 when a small group of concerned local citizens who were worried about the effects of secondhand smoke on our bodies began meeting and planning.

For nearly 50 years, ANR has fought for everyone’s right to breathe smokefree air. We have been engaged in local, state, and Federal campaigns to protect nonsmokers from exposure to secondhand smoke. From the first smokefree restaurant and bar laws to 35-years of smokefree domestic flights, ANR has worked alongside concerned citizens, flight attendants, musicians, and casino workers to create lifesaving smokefree laws and policies for all people in all types of employment.

ANR has never shied away from taking on Big Tobacco at all levels of government and was one of six intervenors in the RICO case against tobacco companies. We have much to celebrate, yet there is much still to do to close gaps in smokefree protections.

There is strength in consistency. As we approach our 50th anniversary, ANR is committed to continuing to fight for everyone’s right to breathe smokefree indoor air where they work, live, and play. We need YOU to continue this work, especially now. There are real threats to our funding from state and Federal sources, so your support today is critical. The uncertainty of what lies ahead given the current political landscape makes it difficult for us to move forward with opportunities or counter the challenges to our hard-fought campaign victories.

The organizing of ANR’s early founders set in motion the smokefree movement. ANR’s work (and ANR Foundation support) plus many coalitions of people and partners helped pass a cascade of smokefree laws that has resulted in massive cultural change and improved health for millions of people.

You can help improve the lives of the 58 million people still exposed to secondhand smoke by joining ANR at our event and donating on March 3rd.
